Finals: EPIK Gaming vs. Team SoloMid

Finals: EPIK Gaming vs. Team SoloMid

It was brother vs. brother for the final match at MLG Providence, and if Reginald of TSM was fazed by his team’s loss against EPIK the day before, you couldn’t tell. His dominant play, coupled with solo-top specialist TheRainMan, led TSM to a sweep over EPIK, who weren’t able to mount a credible defense.

The modified best-of-seven format went the minimum number of playable games, as EPIK began the match with a two-games-to-one lead over TSM. TSM needed to put together three wins to take the top slot in Rhode Island.

In Game One, TSM handled the game and continued their run on the day to 3-0, counting their two-game sweep over Dignitas. Nearly every exchange, especially from mid-game on, seemed to go TSM’s way, and Dignitas’ non-standard team comp didn’t pan out.

In Game Two, the teams returned to the map flip-flop strategy from the day before, as EPIK sent Dyrus’ Jax to square off against TheRainMan’s Yorick in the bottom lane. TSM controlled the game from beginning to end, ultimately forcing EPIK to surrender at just under 28 minutes.

Even before Game Three, Reginald’s presence could be felt. EPIK banned Kassadin, one of his best champions, and then used their first pick to take Karthus, effectively a fourth ban to try to slow TSM’s spokesman. Play was a bit slower than the previous games, as EPIK clearly tried to bring the pace to a level they were more comfortable with, but TheRainMan as Yorick took advantage of EPIK’s defensive play by split-pushing his bottom lane.

Congratulations to every team who played at MLG Providence, but special consideration goes to TSM, who rallied out of the loser’s bracket to take down EPIK, the team that beat them the day before.

Player of the match: TSM’s TheRainMan was a dominant force in each game, and capped his play with a dominant 10-2 run as Yorick in Game Three.

Key Plays:

  • Junglers traded ganks early, as Dan Dinh led with a Rammus attack on bottom lane, taking out Chaox’s Ezrael. Shortly thereafter, TheOddOne helped Reginald take out EPIK’s Salce, playing Zilean, in the top lane
  • TSM sent four to the bottom lane to counter an attempted gank from EPIK. A well-time ultimate from TheOddOne’s Maokai put EPIK on the back foot and chased them to their turret, but EPIK lost three to TSM’s one
  • A 22-minute Baron attepm by TSM led to a bad exchange for the team, as EPIK launched an attack from the jungle, losing Dyrus’ Singed and Dan Dinh’s Rammus, but taking out three from TSM
  • Immediately thereafter, TSM rallied to chase down all of EPIK in mid, acing them handily and earning them a Baron buff at 25 minutes
  • Top Players:

TSM’s Reginald was heavily involved throughout the game, utilizing Ryze’s high damage potential to a huge degree and holding off his brother Dan’s Rammus by stopping his Powerball with Rune Prison.

Rammus - Dan Dinh
  Riven - Westrice

Key Plays:

  • Dan Dinh as Rammus attempted a gank with Salce’s Kennen on Reginald’s Karthus, but a key teleport from TheRainMan’s Yorick helped TSM take out Dan after a well-timed ultimate on Karthus. TSM took out Dan and Salce for a two-for-one in their favor
  • A team fight after TSM picked up Dragon at 15 minutes leads to a devastating loss of four on EPIK’s part. Only Reginald fell for TSM, leaving Nhat Nguyen’s Sona alone to defend EPIK’s middle turret
  • Deep within EPIK’s jungle, Chaox and TheRainMan both racked up double kills against EPIK, once again leaving Nhat Nguyen as EPIK’s sole survivor. TSM then went for a quick Baron pickup at 20 minutes
  • Top Players:

Reginald dominated middle lane and seemed to be everywhere as Karthus, racking up 10 kills and assists in a short game. His early level advantage had him so dominant that he was tanking EPIK’s damage dealers by mid-game.

Game 3

Even before the game, Reginald’s presence could be felt. EPIK banned Kassadin, one of his best champions, and then used their first pick to take Karthus, effectively a fourth ban to try to slow TSM’s spokesman. TSM flipped the map again, sending Chaox’ Ezrael and Xpecial’s Sona against Salce’s Vladimir top, denying him some key early experience until EPIK adjusted and sent Nhat Nguyen’s Taric to join him.

Heimerdinger - Dan Dinh

Key Plays:

  • A fight at bottom went well for TSM, dropping EPIK’s Dan Dinh as Karthus, then cascading through Westrice’s Riven and Nhat Nguyen’s Taric, letting TSM take down EPIK’s turret
  • TheRainMan’s Yorick ran right past an EPIK ward to help TheOddOne gank Dyrus’ Vladimir in the top lane, leading to another downed tower in TSM’s favor
  • Inside EPIK’s jungle, a big team fight broke out. The teams traded three kills apiece, but Salce’s Vladimir picked up all three for a triple kill, icing Reginald to pick up an extra 363 gold
  • Pushing into EPIK’s base, TheRainMan led TSM as Yorick to take out all but Nhat Nguyen’s Taric, TheRainMan securing three of the four kills.
Top Players: TSM’s TheRainMan was a Yorick possessed, not only leading his team in kills and gold, but also in tower kills. His back door pushes in the bottom lane kept EPIK on the defensive through the mid-game.
